How to Enable SMTP Authentication
The steps vary slightly depending on the email client you are using. Here’s how to do it in the most common ones:
Microsoft Outlook
- Go to File > Account Settings > Account Settings.
- Select your email account and click Change.
- Click on More Settings.
- Go to the Outgoing Server tab.
- Tick My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication.
- Select Use same settings as my incoming mail server.
- Click OK to save changes.
Apple Mail (macOS)
- Go to Mail > Preferences.
- Select the Accounts tab and choose your email account.
- Click on Server Settings.
- Ensure that Outgoing Mail Account (SMTP) is set to use authentication.
- Enter your email address and password if not already saved.
Mozilla Thunderbird
- Click the Menu icon and go to Account Settings.
- Select Outgoing Server (SMTP) from the list.
- Select the relevant SMTP server and click Edit.
- Ensure Authentication method is set to Normal password.
- Ensure your username is set to your full email address.
Apple iPhone (iOS Mail App)
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap Mail, then tap Accounts.
- Select your email account from the list.
- Tap Account again on the next screen.
- Scroll down to the Outgoing Mail Server section and tap SMTP.
- Tap mail.obrienmedia.co.uk under Primary Server.
- Ensure the following settings are configured:
- Server: ON
- Host Name: mail.obrienmedia.co.uk
- User Name: Your full email address
- Password: Your email account password
- Use SSL: ON
- Authentication: Password
- Server Port: 465 (SSL) or 587 (STARTTLS)
- Tap Done in the top right to save your changes.
